What is a scam?
A scam is a dishonest way to get money, information or something valuable, by tricking you.
With the increasing use of computers and mobile devices connecting to the internet, an online scam is a common way someone can get you to send money, give out personal details, or buy something without checking it properly.
Common types of scams
Understanding the common types of scams and how they work allows you to better protect yourself from becoming a victim.
Dating and romance scams
Dating and romance scams often take place over a period of time. The scammer uses fake online profiles on dating sites or social media to trick you. The scammer will go to great lengths to build your trust, win your affection and convince you that the relationship is real. Once they have your trust, they start asking for money or for personal details.
Investment scams
These scams involve offers that make you feel like you’re going to miss out on a great opportunity if you do not act quickly and invest or they guarantee that your investment will return huge amounts of money.
Lottery and competition scams
These scams try to trick you into giving money or personal details first in order to receive your winnings or claim a prize in a competition or lottery that you did not enter. The scammers will tell you that you need to pay a fee or make a deposit before they release your winnings or prize. Sometimes they will tell you to call a number or send a text message to claim your prize.
